Assessment is an essential part of teaching and learning, and can have many purposes:
- Improve student learning
- Provide feedback and guidance
- Analyze student performance
- Track student progress
Teachers use different types of assessments (formative, summative, or diagnostic) depending upon the purpose. Assessments can assist in the identification of student needs and can help teachers design more effective teaching strategies. They can also be used to help students understand their own strength and weaknesses and set goals to make progress and achieve their best.
Teachers at every grade administer a variety of assessments within their classrooms for multiple purposes. However, at the district level, Claymont administers the NWEA Map assessments for all K-12 students to provide baseline data and monitor academic progress throughout the school year in Reading, Math, and in some grade levels, Science. These assessment are administered three times each year (September, January, April)..
In addition to our district-wide testing, the state mandates certain assessments for specific groups of students. One such requirement is for whole grade screening for Giftedness in two grade levels. Claymont administers this whole grade gifted screening at Grades 2 & 4. Another mandated assessment is the OELPS and OELPA, which is required of all Limited English Proficient students, to monitor progress on English Language Proficiency. Across the state, all Juniors are required to take the ACT or SAT at their district free of charge. Claymont administers the ACT to our Juniors in February. Finally, the district administers the Ohio State Tests in English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies to all students beginning at grade three and continuing through their high school years.
